After discharge from the hospital, fluid intake is of the utmost importance. The child with adenoidectomy will probably start to take close to a normal diet later on the same day or early the next day. The child with tonsillectomy will probably not take solid food for approximately 3 - 4 days and therefore fluid supplementations are extremely important. Dairy products will have a tendency to make secretions thick.

  • .

For adenoidectomy a child may return to school in approximately 1 - 2 days, basically depending on the post-operative symptoms. The child with tonsillectomy will actually need approximately 1 week without school or work.

  • .

Any evidence of bleeding should be reported to our office. The most common time for bleeding after discharge from hospital will be approximately 7 - 10 days later, when they may expectorate a small portion of blood. Usually this can be easily controlled with gargling of ice water or ice chips in a face forward position. If the bleeding is severe and/or if the bleeding does not subside over a few minutes, then you must immediately notify the office.

  • .
For pain control, a prescription for Tylenol with codeine has been given. Plain Tylenol Elixir may be used if your child cannot tolerate the Tylenol with Codeine Elixir.
  • .

You most likely will experience some ear pain and this usually occurs approximately 48 - 72 hours after the surgery. This is normal and may be relieved with Tylenol.

  • .
Chewing gum prior to eating or drinking sometimes helps reduce the amount of pain.
  • .

A temperature of approximately 100 is normal for the first 3 - 4 days after surgery. If it does rise above 101, please notify our office regarding this.

  • .
Postoperative appointment, if not scheduled pre-operatively should be scheduled post-operatively so that we may see you or your child in approximately 7 days.
