Injection Snoreplasty is a promising new
treatment for snoring. Snoring is a common problem affecting
24 percent of adult males and nine percent of adult females.
The majority of snorers seek a procedure that will provide quiet,
peace and harmony in the bedroom. Because 90 percent of snoring
is generated by the uvula and soft palate, procedures that resect,
shorten or stiffen the uvula and soft palate have generally been
successful, but these are unfortunately either painful or expensive.
The latest development to treat snoring
is called injection snoreplasty. One to two mililiters (cc) of
a sclerosing agent is injected at the base of the uvula. This
causes the same scarring created by surgery and radiofrequency
procedures. Injection snoreplasty, however, is not painful and
is less expensive than other available procedures.
The majority of injection snoreplasty patients
will have minor discomfort for a day or so. This is usually managed
by a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, such as Advil or
Motrin. While our experience is short-term, it appears that the
injection snoreplasty is every bit as effective as previous invasive,
painful and expensive therapies.
