1.) Patients having
undergone tympanomastoidectomy usually do not experience a lot of pain,
but it is normal to have mild to moderate discomfort. Tylenol or pain
medication prescribed by your physician should be used as directed.
Please do not use Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, or Advil.
2.) Following surgery, you should limit your physical activities until
seen for followup by your physician. Please maintain water precautions
until reevaluated by your physician. Strenuous activities or heavy
lifting should be avoided until you have received clearance from your
physician.
3.) Depending on the type of surgery performed, you may be discharged
from the hospital with a packing or drain in place. This may mean a
physician's visit the day following surgery. These appointments shall be
made prior to your discharge from the hospital. The office number is
207-797-5753. After tympanomastoidectomy it is not unusual for the
hearing to seem worse than prior to surgery. This is probably due to packing
that is placed at the time of surgery. The packing dissolves over a
period of several weeks. With a cholesteatoma, hearing may permanently be
decreased in order to cure your ear disease. If you have questions
regarding your hearing, please direct these to your physician to explain
them. Vertigo may occur after any ear surgery. This usually settles down
48-72 hours after the surgical procedure. If this persists, please
contact your physician.
4.) There may be an incision behind the ear. This incision is to be
cleaned with hydrogen peroxide, and then antibiotic ointment is to be
placed on this area twice a day until seen by your physician.
5.) A Glasscock or ear dressing may be in place when you awaken from
surgery. This dressing is in place to accumulate drainage from the ear
postoperatively. This dressing can be changed when it becomes saturated.
The dressing should be changed at least once a day.
6.) There are no restrictions regarding your diet after surgery. Ear
surgery and anesthesia may cause nausea symptoms. Please be aware of this
and regulate your diet accordingly.
7.) Sutures or staples may need to be removed following your surgery.
This will be peformed at your postoperative appointment.
